Process Piece
How Did We Choose the Topic:
"Our group of four people was able to choose our topic based on who thought the topic would be interesting to research as well as how relevant it was to the assignment and National History Day 2013. The first step in choosing a relevant topic was to do some brief research on the internet about turning points in history. Based on some further investigation we made sure that our topic would have plentiful research available to us on the internet. The goal was to not choose a topic that we might later regret choosing because of the limited resources available to us. We came to the conclusion that researching the Manhattan Project would be a good topic to represent a turning point as well as our groups liking. Eventually, we narrowed down our topic to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan because upon careful analysis it was the main turning point in the Manhattan project."
How Did We Conduct Our Research:
"After picking a topic our group needed to find a relevant overview and background articles that helped prove the Manhattan Project as a turning point. To do so we used mainly the internet and found credible sources that had information that sounded accurate and useful. After the first set of research we narrowed our topic to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This set of research was to be analytical and have a more in depth analysis of the topic. Finally, the third set of again consisting of five sources was to be primary sources that included historical documents, letters, diaries, photographs and sometimes even speeches and interviews. After locating these sources we needed to extract the information from the articles. One way of doing so was highlighting the important and useful information and possibly taking notes on the articles so we could easily find the information we needed for the second part of the project. Overall, the research was easy to find with the right methods and proved to be helpful in learning about an important turning point in history."
How Did We Select Our Presentation Type:
"Since we are engulfed in technology we felt that we should integrate it into our project. A website allows more people than our classmates to view our information and will become an interactive site for National History Day. It seemed like it would be the most effective way to display our information. With a website, we are able to use links and pages that will allow us to display our information in a readable and navigable way. Also with a website we are all able to work on it at our houses with ease and not have to spend countless hours coordinating meetings and supplies."
How Does this Project Relate to the Ridge High School History Day Theme:
"Our condensed topic of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki relates strongly to the National History day topic because is was an influential turning point that affected millions of people and countries all the way up until present day. Since the bombing directly affected people of Japan we know that this is a memorable day in their history and ours. This invention of the atomic bomb later influenced the world because it became a spark and led the way in further nuclear weapons development in the world. Ever since the United States shocked the world with the bomb's power, countries have developed programs for nuclear research and development. This clearly was a turning point in the world because it caused a series of events to occur and brought a drastic change to the way the world operates today in terms of military and security measures. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a turning point in history and is a topic that represents National History Day and the 2013 topic."
